Slow and steady wins the race in corporate wellness. A good analogy is the slow food movement. The North American economy has grown so quickly since the Industrial Revolution that everything was about efficiency, speed, and convenience. This is the same for our diets as well as our workplace.

Diet: McDonald’s, TV dinners, canned foods, soda

Workplace: cubicles, compartments, departments, business specialization

We are currently making progress in both spheres, almost in conjunction.

Diet: Panera, sit-down dinner movements, farm-to-table cuisine, kombucha

Workplace: death to cubicles!, shared spaces, interpersonal teams, business generalization

What’s the next step?

Actually applying them.

Although awareness of these topics is increasing, actions have not changed as nearly as much as the amount of talk it’s been getting.

As wellness advocates, we believe that it’s important to keep persisting. Here are some tips to talk the talk AND walk the walk:

  1. Choose attainable goals. An office marathon off the bat might sound lofty, but is unreasonable and might scare some off. Start small, with lunchtime walks at a nearby park, or a stretching challenge.
  2. Make health a team activity. Eat lunch together. Create an anonymous “you’re awesome” box for daily messages of affirmation.
  3. Assign a closing time for the office. More hours spent at the office does not equal more hours worked. Encourage employees to pursue their hobbies outside of work.
