A day of talks and workshops empowering students to use prototyping and project management skills for more impactful service learning projects.

We’re all familiar with beach day clean ups where we spend 2 hours picking up rubbish at East Coast Park or flag day where we take tin cans to the streets asking for donations. No doubt the importance of these volunteering acts, but can we challenge our students to organize projects that form longer-lasting impacts and benefits for our communities and beneficiaries? We challenged students to think bigger during this Changemaker Series Day at Eunoia Junior College.

The day started off with Louis, founder of Praxium, sharing about his ups and downs throughout his journey and how students can take small actions to impact communities.

Thereafter, students participated in different workshops to help them understand service learning better and be better equipped to lead community projects.

Workshop 1: Prototyping for Good

Using simple tools such as cardboards for fast prototyping of spaces and products to test and validate project ideas.

Louis sharing about his design experience prototyping and testing out classroom spaces for a project.
Students formed groups and were given their tools to start prototyping.
Students made their own ‘boxes’ as tables/chairs to prototype a space.
Students gathered their prototype boxes to form a space simulating an interview process with a beneficiary.

Workshop 2: Service Learning Project Planning & Management

Learning how to effectively plan for a service learning project, considering the schedule, roles and responsibilities as well as the beneficiaries’ perception.

Assistant Facilitator preparing for the first challenge that students need to solve in their teams.
Team 1 discussing how they can overcome the challenge.
Lead Facilitator consolidating learning points and getting students to reflect.

What students say after the workshop:

“The activities and games were fun! It helps me to frame the ideas i have in a way that will allow me to carry out my plans.” — Lek Siang Ern

“The game was very engaging. It teaches us the steps to take as many people are interested to helping their target group, but often forget the research process.” — Jamin Aw

Once again, thank you EJC for having us and we hope all of these students go forth and do amazing service learning projects to help our community.
