How do you get started owning your education beyond the classroom?

So many of us are conditioned to associate learning with school. But the truth is: with an internet connection and some free time, we are more empowered to learn virtually anything and everything we want.

Need a little push to get started? From computer science to philosophy and mindfulness, check out the top 5 Youtube channels we’ve picked to kickstart your self-directed learning journey:

1. Crash Course

Fast-paced and digestible: the always entertaining Green brothers (including TFIOS author John Green) break down a broad range of complex concepts & events in STEM, history, sociology, theatre & drama — making no topic too complicated or too boring.

2. School of Life

Created by writer Alain de Botton, the School of Life explores the deep questions we hold but might not dare discuss. Grapple with topics like ‘What it’s like to have a mental illness’ or ‘Why we’re still single’, and find out how we might apply philosophical teachings to be happier & healthier.

3. Khan Academy

Go in depth into the tricky concepts that have you confused in school — think targeted math and science intensives via short clips. For less academic content, also check out their Growth Mindset series, which helps students connect learnings from their experiences to overcome challenges in their lives.

4. RSA

Get inspired to make positive social change and take away insights for self-improvement. Learn from thought leaders and animations that demonstrate powerful concepts that could just lead to a better world, and a better you.

5. Lambda School

Based on the conviction that students shouldn’t have to take a financial gamble on their education, the Lambda school trains software engineers online for free, until/unless students find a job that pays them over USD 50,000 a year. If you’re curious to see if a career or further studies in computer science are for you, there’s no reason not to check this out!

. . .

Now let’s hear from you! Does online learning work for you — why/why not? Let us know in the comments — we’d love to understand your experience.
