We brought groups of students from Yayasan Mendaki on a Career Experiential Learning Journey to different organizations —
Blk71 NUS Enterprise, PIXEL Labs, GovTech Singapore, Studio 1914 and Bold@Work.

Apart from immersing in the cool work spaces and meeting real professionals from different industries, students also experienced what these individuals do everyday at work!

TLDR; watch the video we made here:

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 💡— Blk71 NUS Enterprise

Would you buy slime thats chocolate-flavoured 🍫 and edible? Or perhaps a slime pillow that finally cures your insomnia nightmares? — These were ideas that our budding young entrepreneurs pitched after being inspired by Nasrul, social entrepreneur who co-founded Project Nomad.

Other than immersing themselves in the spirit of entrepreneurship at Blk71, they got their hands dirty and tried out what it really is like brainstorming about new product ideas, figuring out distribution channels and even pricing models.

GAME DESIGN 🎲 — Pixel Labs

If meeting a real game designer and visiting a creative studio for game makers doesn’t sound anything fun to you, i don’t know what else does.

Apart from touring the creative space at Pixel Labs, the students designed and prototyped their very own board games. Who says you need a fancy online mobile app game to have fun?

IT & SOFTWARE 📱 — GovTech The Hive

GovTech — the tech hub responsible for the public sector’s digital transformation. The students were greeted by friendly software engineers there and were introduced to some of the projects they are working on.

Then, the bulk of the day was spent working in teams to ideate, design and prototype their own mobile application. By doing so, they experienced what these folks do everyday — working in teams to develop and test their ideas.

MEDIA & FILM 🎬 — Studio 1914

Film makers (HongHu and Adzlynn) from Studio1914 showed the students around their humble studio and shared about the basics of film storytelling.

Using only just their mobile phones, students wrote their own scripts, directed and filmed a 30-second commercial. We wanted to show students that they can start experimenting and filming without needing any fancy filming equipment. Check out their masterpieces here!

ART & TECHNOLOGY 🎨 — Bold@Work

Besides getting a chance to chat with freelance artist Dennis, students got their hands dirty and created their own art pieces using a combination of 3D laser-printed patterns and other art mediums.

PROJECT SHOWCASE @ NLB 🏆

To end the day off, students gathered at National Library to showcase their projects in a mini-exhibition style sharing.

The slime entrepreneurs presented their pitches, the film-makers screened their final commercials while the game designers, software engineers and artists proudly exhibited their works.

It was indeed a fruitful and meaningful Saturday spent for the students. We’re glad to have had this opportunity to inspire them and we thank everyone who contributed to making this learning journey a successful one!
