If you run a business, small or large, it can be difficult to know when it is time to rebrand. Often people ask if they should rebrand because of a concern about something in their brand — perhaps they have even seen a competitor rebrand recently.

As a design company, we see lots of brands which could benefit from a rebrand, but often trundle along for years before finally getting one.

From a designer’s eye, it is quite easy to make a quick superficial analysis on whether it could be time to rebrand. We sum up a few things we look out for to analyse if you would benefit from rebranding right now.

Outdated styles

This is a huge motivation to rebrand. Your brand provides a significant first impression for people. With recent advances in technology design styles have been changing faster than ever.

That looks as if it is stuck in 2010 — I wonder what else is going wrong here?

Having an outdated style is harmful for business. People will associate your brand with outdated products, services, and as a result lose confidence. If you think you your brand looks a little outdated then it’s a perfect time to rebrand.

You are about to change

If you are about to launch a new product, deliver a new service, or start a new contract, it is a perfect time to rebrand as it will ensure you place your best foot forwards. It’s also more efficient to apply the new branding to new assets.

Not portraying your values

As your businesses progresses, it changes. It often reaches a point where your brand no longer represents what you actually think, do, and feel. This is challenging to see as an insider. Being immersed in your projects, culture, and values makes it easy to miss they are not being portrayed externally.

You need more flexibility

Today a brand will have more varied requirements than it would a few years ago. Style manuals and guidelines can start to cause harm by being overly restrictive, contain redundant information, and perhaps overlook important areas where you need to apply the brand. If you have developed a habit of ignoring your brand guidelines, it is a good idea to look into a rebrand.

Getting a new website

This is a good time to rethink your brand, and allows your site to be fully integrated with the feelings, values, and design choices of your new brand rather than having to do it all again later.

You have yet to brand

In today’s fast paced lean world, when you are focused on the day-to-day it can be easy to overlook having a comprehensive and succinct brand. If you bought ‘a logo’ on its own, then it is worth looking into the power of branding, and how you could be missing out on sales, leads, customers, and more.

If you are still not sure

Take a look at sites such as Brand New to see interesting rebrands and the latest styles. There’s no harm in making comparisons between your brand and similar brands in the same industry, or looking out for current trends.
