Several months ago, Cosmopolitan editors teamed up with the AI research lab OpenAI and a digital artist named Karen X Cheng. The result was the first magazine cover created by artificial intelligence.

The prompt:
“A wide angle shot from below of a female astronaut with an athletic feminine body walking with swagger towards camera on Mars in an infinite universe, synthwave digital art”.

At the time, DALL-E 2 was just being released in beta, and Cosmopolitan was able to get early access to it. Since then, which is only 3 months in human time but seems like 3 years in AI time, DALL-E 2, along with other powerful AI transformers have been improving at a rapid pace.

So I thought it would be an interesting experiment to try and craft AI generated cover art for some popular magazine.

The intent was not simply to generate good images, but would AI be able to compose good cover designs?

A couple of points to mention…

One is that all the covers that I am showcasing here are my top favorites, but these came after many re-rolls and refining. There are only two covers that rendered near…
