Looking to the future is something we just tend to do naturally as a civilization — this forward-focused progression is one of the reasons why our tech sectors evolve at a rapid pace, why medicine is advancing the way it is and why answers about our universe are continuously discovered.

The 2020’s are shaping up to be what we’re envisioning it to be — modest advancements in what we already have around us. Some things, possibly a little more far fetched than others (like text-by-thought) are still within the realm of possibility. Regardless, below is a list featuring only a handful of what we can expect as we slowly cross the threshold into yet another decade.

The 5G Standard

Even though some providers are claiming to provide ‘5G’ networks, the real shift has yet to occur. Since 1981, communication networks have undergone an incredible evolution, an evolution that is set to enter its 5th phase at the start of the 2020s.

1G: Provided basic voice service

2G: Designed for voice with improved coverage and capacity

3G: Designed for voice with some data consideration (i.e. text or internet)

4G: Designed primarily for data, exceptional coverage and capacity
