Has Tesla’s Build Quality Improved?

Tesla has been known to have poor build quality in many of its vehicles, from panel gaps to touchscreen issues. But, over the past few years, the build quality of Teslas has improved significantly. When the first Model 3’s were delivered during the summer of 2017, customers noticed major issues that were unacceptable for a vehicle at the price point of $50,000. Poor paint jobs caused under spray in many areas of the car. Some areas of the car were not touched by paint at all. Malfunctions caused the touchscreen to go black when driving down the highway. Drivetrain issues caused the vehicle to be inoperable. The process to get these defects repaired was not easy. Tesla owners often found their cars sitting in the repair shop for months at a time. In the case of visual defects, Tesla would decline to fix these imperfections and Tesla owners would just have to deal with these issues.

Three years later, when the first Model Ys were delivered, the build quality had not improved. This vehicle suffered major quality issues. Customers who had opted for the 7-seat Model Y had to deal with a faulty sensor under the second-row seats, causing an alarm to go off when driving.
