Trump, his rise and destructive impact are a consequence of globalisation and its devastating economic and social impacts — and it is just as consequential. This is not a one-off aberration, instead it is a repeat of the economic and social catastrophe that engulfed Germany in the 1930s

Since the 1970s, the financialisation of manufacturing has propelled globalisation and the wholesale export, to lower cost countries, of US manufacturing, and industrial innovation excellence. The extent of de-industrialisation is such that the restoration of US manufacturing to a world leading position would require the equivalent of a ‘Marshall plan’ to rebuild a modern machine tool industry, smart manufacturing and semiconductor industries, and to restore workforce capability on the scale needed.

Advances in machine tools and semiconductors were the result of government funded R&D and the dissemination of information to industry to accelerate adoption and further developments — a public good that was privatised by Financialisation and exported for short-term financial gain.
