Occasionally there’s a thread on Twitter¹ where people reminisce about things from the past and, I have to say, I’m a bit of a fanboy about the whole thing — often going on a long trip down memory lane right to the bottom of the thread.
Money is a big thing to get all proustian about, particularly in the UK for example, with the change from the frankly bizarre base 12 of pounds shillings and pence, the move away from the £1 note, and the disappearance of the half pence (let along the sixpence and the thruppenny bit²).
There are also the disappearance of the greatest chocolates like the Bar Six and the Swisskit, the shrinkage of the famous Mars and Twix, never mind the dreadful renaming of Opal Fruits to Starburst and Marathon to Snickers.
I wouldn’t call that progress³, really.
They say change is always good but I do beg to differ in many cases. Whether it’s with agile over waterfall (a disaster), UML over flowcharts (an even worse disaster), or simply VSC over vim (so many unnecessary bells and whistles, plugins, and basically distracting ocular diarrhoea) — sometimes things staying the same is really the best thing.
