Is It Possible to Harness Energy from Space to Save the Earth?

For decades, people have been constantly searching for the answer to this question. Every time a new clean alternative energy source is identified, its fatal flaws are eventually uncovered.

From nuclear to wind to solar power, all energy sources have been metaphorically dragged through the mud. With traditional nuclear fusion too risky, wind not generating enough power, the sun being absent from large parts of the world, it seems as if any workable solution to harness energy from space is years away.

Needless to say, the world needs electricity every day. And the demand for that energy is steadily increasing day by day. It’s essential to develop a way to store energy on a large scale before we can make the switch to renewable sources.

The one strategy that appears to be the most future-proof is the idea of capturing solar energy in space where the sun is most present. Solar panels are the one piece of technology currently able to facilitate this endeavor. The entire process would require several steps as given below:

Step 1 — Collect radiation from the sun

Step 2 — Convert it into electricity

Step 3 — Turn that electricity into microwaves

Step 4 — Beam the microwaves down to Earth and

Step 5 — Convert the microwaves back into electricity to be used by the people on Earth.

Now the question is what are the benefits of collecting this energy up in space? Is it possible to make this work on the Earth itself?

Well, the rotation of the Earth leads us to the day and night every day, which means we can’t have sunlight 24/7. Also, our planet naturally filters some of the sun out, so not all solar radiation makes it down to the Earth.

To fix this problem, a satellite up in space can be positioned in such a way that it prolongs its exposure to the sun and has the potential to capture eight times more energy.

Unfortunately, there’s a downside too. To execute this plan, we need a vast array of solar panels and equipment conversion systems both in orbit and on the ground. Hence, it becomes extremely expensive to develop this system in space. The engineering and economic challenges are daunting for this approach to become practical.

However, many research organizations are constantly looking for more feasible ways to make solar energy more accessible to Earth. Hopefully, in the near future, we will have electricity and clean energy systems available for anyone at any given time around the world.
