Israel is using effectively autonomous AI systems for mass-scale target generation and bombing. Social media, drone footage, and mobile phone data are surveilled to populate preconceived ‘militant’ profiles (setting up confirmation bias). Almost every Palestinian in Gaza has been profiled and ranked as a militant threat by the ‘Lavender’ system which has automatically created a kill list. Targets from the kill list are tracked by the ‘Where’s Daddy?’ tracking system which notifies the system operator when a target can be bombed — at night, when they have returned home.

As of 13th March 2024, an estimated 157,200 buildings have been damaged or destroyed, of which approximately 90% were apartment buildings. That is, Israel’s bombing campaign has almost exclusively focused on apartment buildings most of which were bombed at night when the IDF believed a Hamas or PIJ fighter had returned to their home together with their families.

Israel developed the idea of mass devastation to civilian areas for strategic purposes during the Second Lebanon War of 2006, which was formulated in the ‘Dahiya Doctrine’.
