Do you know about the event in space that could have wiped out all humans and animals on earth?

This happened sooner than you may think. Back in 2012 life was threatened to earth once again. This time because of a solar storm. This particular solar storm was one of the strongest ever recorded that sent energy across earth’s orbit and could have crippled electrical systems across the planet. “If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces,” said Daniel Baker of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in a NASA press release.

If the storm had hit the earth it would have caused devastating results. It would have turned off radios, power grids, TVs, and GPS systems worldwide, and as baker said “everything that plugs into a wall socket”

Not only would you have not been able to use your computer, but you also wouldn’t be able to charge your phone, heat, or cool your house outside of a log furnace and water or gas wouldn’t be able to be pumped anywhere across the planet. This would cause food shortages because people wouldn’t be able to transport goods using gas and the power outages would cause riots. People would hoard the food, water, and clothes that the stores have left and the world would slowly go into despair. The economy would crash, people would starve and dehydrate, people would freeze and overheat and crime rates would be at the maximum.

How close were we to getting hit and the world getting devastated you may ask? “If the eruption would have occurred just a week earlier, Earth would have been in the line of fire,” said the baker.

These energy waves hit the stereo A spacecraft which provided important data researchers have been analyzing for a while.

While NASA estimates that this storm was stronger than the Carrington event which was a burst in 1859 that hit our planet. Some beautiful things came out of the Carrington event such as the northern lights were seeable all the way from Cuba, Tahiti, and Hawaii!

Now, what is a solar storm you may ask? A solar storm is when the sun spews outbursts of plasma energy. This solar storm was one of the biggest and fastest recorded with the bursts barreling out at more than 1,800 mph.

If we happened to be in the blast radius, we would be the first hit with a solar flare, a blast of radiation that could have caused power outages on its own. Next, a wave of magnetized plasma would come called a coronal mass ejection. This would send millions if not billions of hot charged hydrogen and helium atoms. These would cause the most damage and be completely devastating

According to NASA, it would have caused over $2 trillion to repair.
