Itā€™s a Pixelated Classic.

Hello, you guys. I hope you are unique today because, unlike yesterday, Iā€™m excited to write about todayā€™s game.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game: Iā€™d usually get on games with obnoxiously long names, but this game gets an exception primarily because of how badass the name is.

Also, if you canā€™t tell, I LOVE this game even more so than Dreamlight Valley for a couple of reasons weā€™ll get into later, but as always, letā€™s get into a little history lesson.

Scott Pilgrim is a side-scrolling beat-em developed by Ubisoft Chengdu & Montreal and published by Ubisoft on August 10, 2010.

Its movie counterpart was released on August 13, 2010.

The movie and game are based on the comic books released by Bryan Lee Oā€™Malley from August 2004 to July 2010 and published by Oni Press (Also, I want to buy and read these books for a blog post, too).)

Now finally weā€™re all done with our history lesson letā€™s see: The Story, Gameplay, and finally Sound Design & Visuals.

The Story

The game and movie, respectively, were only loosely based on their graphic novel counterparts.

The story is quite simple, but there is so much character packed into the world and characters as a whole.

The Game doesnā€™t delve into all the history; it throws you straight in. However, if you sit through the opening cutscenes before starting, thatā€™s where we get our setup.

So, the scene starts with a party, and Scott sees Romona standing alone. And as he approaches her, they immediately realize they are connected.

But we cut to Scott getting attacked by seven people, who we then find out are Romonaā€™s seven exes: 6 boyfriends and one girlfriend he must defeat to maintain Romonaā€™s love.

We can play the game as any of the four main characters in the base game: Scott, Romona, Kim, or Stephen, and in the complete addition, you can play as Knives or Wallace.

To be honest with you guys, I do wish there was a little more context given similar to the movie; however, because both were released so close together, it was probably meant this way to encourage people to watch.

But to give you guys a little more context for those who may not have watched the movie:

Scott is a 22-year-old in a failing band with his friends Kim and Stephen called Sex Bob-Omb.

Scott plays the Bass, Kim plays drums, and Stephen primarily does vocals.

Scott, at the beginning of the film, is dating a 17-year-old named Knives, whom everyone seems to be disapproving of, yet she is one of their few and biggest fans.

One day, he has a dream about a girl, which, at the time, he doesnā€™t know until he meets her for the first time when she delivers a package to them.

This causes Scott to be disinterested in Knives but doesnā€™t end things before perusing Romona, and this is where we enter in terms of in-game.

Gameplay

Just like in the story section, the Gameplay is simple as well, yet very effective.

The game can be played as a single player or couch or online play multiplayer.

Each playable character has their movesets, and when you start a playthrough with one player, progress is saved to them only, so if you choose someone else, you create all over.

Each character's moves can be upgraded essentially as you progress through the levels and learn new moves.

There are also random items or even weapons you can pick up throughout the level to use and or toss at enemies; however, they are only useable as you find.

As usual, you have HP, A.k.a Hit or Heart points, and spread attacks, in this case known as Guts points.

As you fight characters, you earn money to spend on snacks or items to replenish health gut points or boost your stats.

Certain items can be bought and kept throughout a level, also known as ā€œTo-Goā€ items.

Similar to Mario, there are hidden areas through the levels, also known as Subspaces, where you can fight piggy banks for extra coins.

The game also has cheat codes that provide the players with a Sound test, Boss Rush, and Survival horror mode, to name a few.

Finally, while all this is amazing, I do have to be a little negative for a second because the game does have some glitches, such as invisible enemies and or hard crashes, that I wish Ubisoft took the time to iron out, especially 14 years after its initial release.

Sound Design & Visuals

Now, this section is probably one of the most exciting ones to get into for me.

First, Eagle-eyed long-time readers will probably notice this is the first time Iā€™ve ever mentioned sound design in a game.

But this should indeed be a testament to how good this gameā€™s sound design is, more specifically, the music.

Man, you guys played through every level from start to end. There were no misses musically; every song kept me hyped and eager to play into the next section.

I sadly canā€™t share videos through the platform, but click here for one of my favorite songs from the game.

Now, Iā€™m moving on to visuals, and this will probably shock some of you guys, but this was the first pixelated game back when it was released when I was 7ā€“8 years old.

And honestly, this game was the first to change my life so much that my senior nickname was ā€œ8bitNia,ā€ a play on pixelated games.

The colors are still bright and vibrant; you see regular people living and caring throughout the levels. Scott is even deep in debt with movie fees, which screams like this is a real place, not a fictional one.

The only genuine gripe I have about any of this is I wish there were more mini-games similar to ā€˜Movie Madness,ā€ where you have to beat continuous obstacles outside of enemies to progress and also more opportunities to look at the world instead of just having to fight through it.

Still, these are minor gripes.

Conclusion

As always, I hope you guys play this game and also share it with your friends because, honestly, you guys wonā€™t regret it.

As a side note, this game was so good when it was initially delisted in December of 2014 but received so much backlash that it was updated and rereleased on January 14th, 2021; it just shows you how many others love this game.

That wraps everything up from me on this one. Thank you guys so much for engaging with me and my work.

I appreciate it.

Support me :)! As always, Iā€™ll catch you guys in the next one ;).
