The ultimate point in the physical description of the universe: ‘the theory of everything’. This concept is an expression of the effort to unite the four fundamental forces in nature: the electromagnetic force, the strong and weak nuclear forces, and gravity.

String theory came to the fore in the last quarter of the 20th century as an attempt to find this compound theory. The idea was to redefine the universe with Planck-length (~10^-35 mm) strings below the quantum level to combine Einstein’s general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. According to the theory, which describes different particles as vibrations on strings, strings are the fundamental structure of reality.
