It’s a big call — but a justified one at that.

Launched on December 25th 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has opened up a whole new perspective on parts of our solar system and universe that are leaving astronomers baffled.

From planets in our solar system to merging galaxies and deep space nebulas located millions of light-years away, JWST’s journey has only just begun.

Here’s a recap of what we learnt from some of JWST’s best images during 2022.

Webb’s First Deep Field

This is SMACS 0723, a cluster of galaxies located 4 billion light-years from Earth. Thousands of galaxies can be seen flooding this near-infrared image of the galaxy cluster.

High-resolution imaging from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope combined with a natural effect known as gravitational lensing made this finely detailed image possible.

Clear examples of mirroring are found in the prominent orange arcs to the left and right of the brightest cluster galaxy. These are lensed galaxies —…
