What are they?

Particle accelerators are wondrous pieces of technology that allow us to study our universe at the smallest of scales. In essence, they are circular tubes that form circuits for particles to accelerate in.

Their main point is to accelerate those particles to speeds approaching that of light and then make them collide with one another, producing a mixture of new and exotic (in some cases) particles.

They have been responsible for the discovery of many new particles in the last decades, allowing us to form and consolidate a basis for the Standard Model of particle physics.

The Accident

Anatoly Bugorski worked as a researcher for the institute of High Energy Physics in Protvino, Russia, home to the largest particle accelerator of the late Soviet Union, the U-70 Synchrotron.
