As Computing power has increased exponentially, previously unthinkable tasks are now possible. If for example we were to examine the world of AI, the Artificial Intelligence that exists today probably wouldn’t have been thought possible some thirty years ago.

With these benefits comes new responsibilities and with these responsibilities comes some concerns.

As stated above, AI is significantly more powerful and functional than it was only a few decades ago. This means that we (as a society) are more likely to give AI tasks of greater importance. When looking at the decisions of AI in a low consequence scenario, one does not need to pay close attention to its processes and few ethical questions arise. I.E. An AI given the task of winning in a game of checkers need not be examined for anything other than its proficiency within the game.

On the other hand, when we give AI the responsibilities of split second, life and death decisions, there obviously needs to be a great level of transparency. This is because these decisions affect people’s lives and futures.
