For the past several years, the sound of the morning alarm has made me feel like one of my enemies. Drowsily waking up and immediately at a loss with the tasks of the day while my feet were still getting out of bed.

Like millions of others, I tried everything from elaborate morning routines to ridiculously expensive wake-up lights in the futile hope of changing myself into one of those mythical “morning people.”

Nothing has ever helped until I learned that for better mornings, the problem with my morning routine had nothing to do with it.

The answer clear right before me was in the fifteen minutes before I shut my eyes every night.

On a Tuesday morning in September, everything collapsed. I had two exams lined up starting at 8 AM, a presentation that I needed to complete, and lost somewhere in the clutches of the morning haze, I recalled that my younger brother had a school event I wouldn’t be able to miss. Standing in the kitchen, staring at my coffee maker while my mind raced through the endless, forthcoming tasks, I realized I’d reached my max.
