This dick-pic-fighting AI will battle online harassment

Online harassment is a problem that terrorizes a large part of our population, but the size of the problem only became apparent after a recent study. In that study from 2020 it was found that 75.8% of girls between the ages 12 and 18 have been sent unsolicited nude images.

Dating app Bumble has gone out to develop a nude-imagery spotting algorithm, known as Private Detector™, to protect their users. When a sent image is suspected to contain offensive content, the recipient is allowed to view it, block it or report the user.

Bumble’s Data Science team has now gone out to create an open-source version of that algorithm and has released it to the public. The company states:

“It’s our hope that the feature will be adopted by the wider tech community as we work in tandem to make the internet a safer place.” — Bumble on their website
