Vision of the Future

The Apple Vision Pro is scheduled to release this Friday. Some are seeing it as a gimmick that will quickly become irrelevant. Others fear it may end all of humanity. Regardless of your position, the Vision Pro will have a permanent effect on our society

Mainstreaming VR

In 1975 Krueger’s Videoplace was released. It was the first interactive “VR” in human history.

The device was able to simulate silhouettes of different users who stood in dark rooms. Users in other rooms could then interact with each other’s silhouettes.

This fascinating contraption was put on display at the Milwaukee Art Center (makes sense).

Needless to say, VR has come a long way since then, from the Nintendo Virtual Boy flop, to the success of the Oculus Quest.

VR has become mainstream, its popular, its entertaining, its fun. But it hasn’t quite gained the type of popularity seen in a smartphone, but this Friday, that all changes

The Apple Effect

One my least favorite things about Apple is how their so good at making things popular.

Take lock screens for example. Androids have had lock screens for years, but as soon as Apple made one, everyone was in love with lock screens.

And VR is no exception, Apple can basically do whatever they want at this point.

Apple will fully optimize VR with the Vision Pro. And simultaneously make it a must-have premium Apple product. Because that is what they’ve been able to do with dozens of other products. Thus making it something that everyone wants to buy.

Getting Cheeky

Apple has been able to stifle the Android market by making it inconvenient for Apple users to interact with Androids (think green boxes).

The same principle applies to VR. Apple will inevitably follow the same model, and make it an inconvenience for Vision Pro users to communicate with other VRs.

The Vision Pro will assume the same air of superiority that the iPhone has.

Additionally, Vision Pros will have excellent connectivity with iPhones, something that almost everyone has. On the other hand, something like the Quest won’t quite have the same amount of connectivity with iPhones.

It would make more sense to buy a Vision Pro then, because it can connect to your iPhone better than anything else could.

The Result

With such an excellent marketing strategy, Apple has only one goal. For the Vision Pro to replace the iPhone.

The future is VR, and Apple wants in on that future. In fact they want to lead that future.

That is what the Vision Pro is designed to do, to move the VR industry forward. Eventually to a place where VR overcomes the smartphone. And of course with the Vision Pro front and center.

My “vision of the future” is this: Due to Apple’s somewhat interesting marketing ways and characteristics, the Vision Pro will become the next iPhone. Leading to a future where everyone is walking around with a Vision Pro over their eyes, instead of a smartphone in their pocket.

Maybe it won’t occur exactly this way, but the Vision Pro will certainly leave a permanent impression on our society. However great or small it is

Only time will tell
