What Happens When Every Summer is “Record-Breaking?”

Yes, it is ‘normally this hot’ now

It’s going to be 40°C in Spain this weekend (that’s 104°F if Celsius isn’t your thing).

Pretty typical for August, right? Nothing to worry about. Just another scorcher of a summer in Spain.

It would be. The only thing is…I don’t live in Sevilla, Malaga, or Madrid.

I live way up north in Galicia.

And it’s not supposed to get this hot in Galicia.

What Happens When ‘Climate Refuges’ Get Hotter?

Galician is famous for being green, wet, and mild. It’s basically the Pacific Northwest of Spain.

Galicia is so reliably cold and wet that it’s where Spaniards go during the summer to escape the heat in the south.

And yet, this past June (2024) was the hottest June ever recorded.

Just like last summer (2023).

And the summer before that (2022).

Because every summer is hotter than the one before. No matter where you go.
