Why is the Speed Of Light The Speed Limit?

Before dwelling on the statement ‘speed of light is considered the speed limit’, why not learn something about the speed of light itself? Speed is the rate of change of motion in any direction while the speed of light is the rate with which light waves propagate through different materials.
