Recently, Premium Jargon obtained a list of internal memos from Go For It, a Minneapolis-based marketing startup. These messages shed light on the rise, life, and fall of Go For It’s Alcohol Policy. They are presented here without edits.

Subject: Formalizing Our Alcohol Policy

Hey Team!

As we’ve now grown past 60 people (WHOA!) we wanted to formalize a policy on alcohol. In the past, we’ve been open to folks having a beer or two (Or three…Chuck knows what I mean!) on Friday after 3:00. That being said, we haven’t ever been clear about what’s allowed and what isn’t. We feel like this has prevented you, responsible folks that you are, from cutting loose!

Effectively immediately, we’re formally allowing folks to do…whatever they want! That’s right, we trust you! If you want a mimosa on Monday, be our guest! Tequila on Tuesday? Do it up! Taste a rare whiskey on Wednesday, practice Thirsty Thursday, and sample some craft brews on Friday.

As long as we’re getting our work done and impressing our clients, feel free to have some drinks. Seriously! Go For It™!

Subject: Re-Formalizing Our Alcohol Policy

Hey Team!

Just wanted to follow up on my email from a few weeks ago regarding our alcohol policy!

We’ve had a few incidents over the past few weeks that we’d really like to avoid in the future. While we still trust you all (seriously!) we did think we should emphasize a few things that, despite our alcohol policy, are not acceptable:

- Showing up to client meetings with a notable buzz

- Blaming misspellings in email on “one too many”

- Taking naps at your desk (Appropriate use of the nap room is obviously acceptable)

- Driving home under the influence (This one should be obvious!)

Let’s keep these things in mind, as we have seen a few instances of each since we implemented the new policy. Remember, we’re here to work and have fun, and one shouldn’t stop us from the other!

Have a great day, and Go For It!

Subject: Clean Up

Team,

Just got in and this place is a mess. I know some of you stayed pretty late for St. Patrick’s Day last Friday (honestly, it looks like some of you may have slept here? What’s up with the blanket forts? Blankets should not leave the nap room!) but that’s no excuse to leave the office in such a mess.

There also appears to be a large amount of vomit on the floor near Chuck’s desk.

We’re going to take the morning to clean…thanks in advance for pitching in.

Subject: Yesterday

Team,

I want to apologize for my actions yesterday. I’ve been under a great deal of stress lately and after coming in early and cleaning, felt the need to blow off some steam. The game we played to incentivize cleaning up quickly got the best of me.

I did want to let you know that Chuck is ok. He was driving at a very low speed when he backed into the tree in the back parking lot.

We also believe that, at this time, it’s probably best for us to restrict drinking in the office. If you’d like to have a beer at your desk after 4:00 on Friday, feel free. Please don’t exceed that limit or abuse that privilege. Thank you.

Subject: Summer!

Hey Team!

This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend and you know what that means. Call up Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, because it’s the Summertime!

While summer is an important time of the year for our clients, we also want to make sure you’re enjoying yourself! As a result, we’re relaxing our alcohol policy and giving you the chance to let loose.

As long as you’re completing your work, you’re free to have some summer dranks! A mid-day rose, a summer ale in the afternoon, even an early morning bloody mary. We’re trusting you all to celebrate summer responsibly. Enjoy!

Just be responsible this time.

Seriously!!
