According to the American Psychiatric Association, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is identified as:

A disorder in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions).

This can manifest in several ways such as obsessive cleaning, putting things in a specific order, or performing actions a certain number of times. OCD-like tendencies could also be double-checking locks, following a ritualistic habit, or something as simple as turning a coffee mug facing the right side every time.

The following story is an experience one of my friends faced during his childhood and has given his consent to share it. We believe that sharing this story will help someone else suffering from a similar experience to know they are not the only ones. It might seem silly, or unbelievable to some, but to us, it can seem very real. Please know that you are not alone and there is help for you out there. I have included some helpful resources at the end of the story so you can start on your journey towards a better life.

All names, dates, and locations mentioned in the story were changed to respect my friend’s privacy.
