“When I was living in Delhi for preparation, I was alone with no family or friends. I had to manage all the chores myself. The food there was pretty bad. I lost 10 kilos in the process. Secondly, after attending coaching classes, there was no time for self study. It is difficult to crack the exam without sufficient self-study time. When you attend coaching classes na, woh bheed chaal ho jaati hai. ‘Woh itna padraha hai, itna time de raha hai’ ; the comparison starts… There was additional pressure from parents. On one side my mother used to tell anyone who came home that I would be travelling in a car with red light on the top, very soon; while my dad used to keep reminding me that I have never been an extraordinary student scoring 97% or anything in school and college and that it would be difficult for me. Both the positive and the negative motivation added a huge pressure to my preparation.

Despite all this, I cleared prelims in my first attempt. After a month when I started studying for mains, I did not feel like it. Because I realised it was not making me happy at all. I closed my books and decided that enough is enough.

Now I teach International Financial Management and Banking and Financial Analysis to MBA students. I have always wanted to do something where my throat could be put to use. I had a meeting with the dean of my college today and he said, ‘Tu itni chotee hai aur MBA mein tumse bhi bade students hai. Kaise kar rahi hai?’ I told him, ‘Sir, Aapne mujhe rakha na. Ye to aapko sochna chahiye tha’. I used to be scared to speak to people before. Now I am not… Also, out of 35 students, at any point 32 students are always present… I take it as a compliment.”
