Angels investors are on the front-line of innovation, trusting teams in their early days, evaluating alpha-prototypes, and backing unproven ideas before everyone else. They end up writing virtually every startup’s first cheque. But some are better than others at finding hidden gems. Today let’s look at the 5 most prolific angel investors in Germany for the past 18 years.

CHRISTOPHE MAIRE

Christophe Maire has more than 18 years’ experience as a founder and CEO of technology ventures. He is the CEO/Founder of Atlantic Labs dedicated to the creation of innovative digital companies out of Berlin. Companies that emerged from Atlantic Labs in past years include MIMI.io, MONOQI, MorninGlory and Medigo. As an angel investor, Christophe was involved in Brands4Friends (eBay), StudyVZ (HB), Plista (groupM), Readmill (Dropbox). He serves on the board of EyeEm and Soundcloud. Christophe was named best “Europe Seed investor of 2011 and 2012” by Techcrunch. He founded txtr, the largest eBooks distribution network in Europe, and gate5, a global leader in mobile navigation software, which he sold to Nokia in 2006. Christophe lives in Berlin with Swiss citizenship, attended school in St.Gallen, ESADE and Stanford and worked in Asia for a few years. Source

FABRICE GRINDA

Fabrice Grinda (born 3 August 1974) is a French entrepreneur, blogger for Business Insider and super angel, with more than 200 investments around the world, including Alibaba Group, Airbnb, Beepi, FanDuel, Palantir, and Windeln. Grinda has had $300 million in investment exits. He is the co-founder and former CEO of Aucland, Zingy, and OLX and is a frequent conference speaker on trends in technology, emerging markets, and investing. Source

MICHAEL BREHM

Michael Brehm is founder and Managing Director of Rebate Networks, a company builder and investment firm focused on E-Commerce ventures. He also serves as co-founder and Partner of Redstone, a Berlin-based Venture Capital firm that manages multiple corporate and institutional venture funds. Prior to his roles at Redstone and Rebate Networks, he was Venture Partner at Target Partners for over five years. From 2006 to 2008 he was managing director of studiVZ Ltd. and significantly contributed to growing the company from its dorm room roots to become one of Europe’s biggest internet businesses. Prior to that, he worked for Merrill Lynch Inc. as an analyst in the M&A sector. In 1995, while still at school, Michael founded his first business, a snowboard clothing company, and gained his first entrepreneurial experience. He got his degree in business administration from WHU in Vallendar (Germany) and also studied at CEIBS in Shanghai (China) and at EGADE in Monterrey (Mexico). Michael mainly invests as a business angel in companies active in the fields of internet, education or healthcare. He is currently a shareholder in more than 15 companies. Source

ROUVEN DRESSELHAUS

Rouven Dresselhaus is Founding and Managing Partner of Cavalry Ventures. He has a deep understanding of the digital economy and simultaneously, Rouven possesses strong ties to the old economy as he grew up closely connected to his family’s business, Dresselhaus GmbH & Co KG, one of the largest providers of screws and fastening parts in Europe. Other than taking the Founders Pledge, he is an avid supporter of and donor for YUNUS Social Business to generate sustainable social impact. Further, Rouven is a regular speaker on several important events and conferences such as Heureka, Wolves Summit, NGIN Mobility, IdeaLab!, EBSpreneurship Forum and the Familienunternehmer-Kongress. He is also a mentor at a number of different accelerator programs like Techstars, Techstars SAP.io, next logistics accelerator and the Axel Springer Plug and Play Accelerator. Prior to Cavalry, Rouven invested privately in more than 35 startups worldwide. Rouven started his career at KPMG as a consultant in the Financial Risk Management practice. He then supported Morten Sondergaard in his investment activities and joined the early/mid stage VC fund Capnamic Ventures as Investment Manager. CHRISTIAN VOLLMANN

Christian Vollmann is a serial-entrepreneur and one of the most active angel investors in Germany. Currently he is founder and CEO of Good Hood GmbH (www.goodhood.eu), the leading provider of social neighbourhood networks in Europe (including nebenan.de in Germany and MesVoisins.fr in France). In the past he was the founder of iLove.de (online dating), MyVideo.de (online video) and co-founder of Affinitas GmbH (premium personal matchmaking, now listed on NYSE as Spark Networks SE, ticker: LOV, www.spark.net). Christian was named "German Business Angel of the Year" in 2017. His investments include Trivago, SumUp, ResearchGate, StudiVZ, Tradeshift, Airhelp amongst others. Christian serves as board member of the Federation of German Startups and as advisor to the German Economic Ministry. He is Venture Partner atPropTech1 Ventures. Source
