Progress was made during DISEC’s afternoon session this Friday (02), with delegate’s being able to convert once vain words into a solid Merging Paper. Though earlier sessions were not very productive due to crisis and lack of agreement in key matters, future now starts to look brighter.

Flow of debate was mainly led by Argentine and Lebanon, who seek a firm stance from the Committee against cluster weapons, opposed by USA, who stands its ground avoiding any definitive resolution against its interests. Saudi Arabia and Norway tried to take part on the conversations, though not being as impactful as seen during past sessions.

The Paper’s approval is a big step towards cluster munition prohibition in the long term and, in a short term, regulation around weapon tecnology and reduction of stockpiles.
