After many sessions and 12 projects approved on Topic A, the Islamic Development Bank is finally on Topic B: Management of Water Resources in Islamic Countries. With only two sessions left, the committee needs to act fast in order to reach its goals to hold back the water crisis in the region.

The first topic presented in this session was Indonesia’s. The proposal consists on a US$1.500.000.000 loan to increase the height of Katulampa Dam (in order to prevent future floods), financed by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Nigeria, Turkey, Malaysia, Algeria and Bangladesh. According to the Republic of Indonesia, the project is an emergency initiative that aims to protect the Jakarta District, especially the city of Bongor. This is a huge step for the country, since, according to Al-Jazeera, before 2050 around 42 million homes around coastal areas will be at risk of flooding.

Indonesia’s project was approved by consensus, which shows the countries are willing to work together, despite diplomatic differences. Moreover, it’s a validation of IsDB’s fundamental role in the humanitarian crisis Indonesia faces.
