DRC: SEE FULL STATEMENT

Jason Burke, our correspondent for African issues, has been missing since 27th of November, when MONUSCO troops were marching on their way to the city of Kalemie (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and suffered an attack by a local rebel group. Jason was kidnapped among a confront of MONUSCO troops with rebels, while MONUSCO men marched on their way for rescuing 18 miners who were stucked in loco also after an attack promoted by rebel groups along with Raia Mutomboki.

All 18 miners are dead. MONUSCO forces took three days to decide whether to take an action for the mine problem, at a clearly failed and inefficient operation. two MONUSCO soldiers were killed and 23 got hurt. 18 rebels were murdered.

The Guardian is offering all support, assistance and aid to Jason’s family and friends at this complicated time. We are closely keeping up all investigations and looking for unanswered questions.
