WHAT IT’S LIKE WORKING AT PRESSED

My name is Fiza. Last year, I joined Pressed as a Social Media Coordinator when it was barely a quarter of a year old. Pressed’s vision — writing real news in real words — strung true to my personal conviction of having easy access to information and news stories at my fingertips. Pressed came in wanting to make that happen for everyone regardless of what they knew or how much time they had. This had me hooked, and I knew that given my past experience with social media, I could contribute to their vision.

Having been a part of this Canadian startup for over a year now, I have watched our mission cement further in how we approach news stories. On a more personal front, there have been many challenges over the year. I am a full-time graduate student, so giving Pressed the time it deserves has been a bit of a juggle. Especially because we have changed our strategies over the year to fit the growing needs of our readers and the resources of the startup. Nevertheless, it has been really special watching it grow. Here’s a quick reflection on the past year.

I joined Pressed in July of 2016. I put a lot of thought into our tweets and Facebook posts. Starting out, our strategy was to inform people and to help them find our newsletter. By December, I marked my 6-monthversary — my approach towards our social media accounts changed. Instead of posting individual stories, I started to attract and engage our followers with teasers of our newsletter. Fast forward to July 2017: our reader base has grown, our Twitter and Facebook accounts have matured, and we launched our Instagram account.

Working on the Pressed team has been a fun, learning experience. The team is supportive of each other and works hard together. Since I work closely with Jacqueline to manage Pressed’s social pages, I get to see her work in real time. In particular, her acute perception and resilient eye on her vision is what makes Pressed a success. Her media and marketing strategies have not only informed my approaches towards Pressed, but also my personal life. Thanks to Jacqueline, I engage with my career goals with the same passion and rigour.

Thanks for reading! — Fiza
