Since the Nintendo Switch’s release back in March 2017, Nintendo’s hybrid console has been facing massive amounts of success and praise. 2019 is here, and Nintendo is planning to release even more titles this year, including some highly anticipated “big-title” games. If you’re an Eastside student who owns a Switch, here are eight games you should be looking forward to in 2019:

Animal Crossing (Working Title)

Animal Crossing is a ‘social-stimulation’ game in which the player interacts with anthropomorphic animals, carries out various tasks like fishing and catching bugs, and spends their time customizing their own village.

It’s been 7 years since the last game, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, was released on the 3DS, so you can imagine the hype for this upcoming game. Animal Crossing for the Switch was announced back in September of 2018 after Isabelle, a character from Animal Crossing, was revealed to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, another game for the Switch. The reveal of a new game caught many fans off guard, thus generating lot of hype for it.

Eastside sophomore Jonathan Villafane is one of those fans. “This game is gonna be lit,” he says. “I’m gonna spend hours on it.”

While a specific release date has not yet been announced, Animal Crossing is expected as early as March.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The Fire Emblem games are a series of turn-based tactical role-playing games (RPG) that are known for their punishing death system. When a character in the player’s party dies, they die permanently and there is no way to bring them back. This raises the stakes for the player, making it a much more ‘thrilling’ game in a sense.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses will include a brand-new story, new characters, and many new features and twists on the battling system. The newest installment will be the first Fire Emblem game to be released on Nintendo’s home consoles since the Wii’s Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn back in 2007. It’s been over decade since then, and many people are looking forward to the next installment in this long-beloved series.

While a specific release date has not yet been released, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is expected this Spring.

Pokémon (Working Title)

This one may be a bit confusing as Gamefreak, the company that develops the Pokémon games, had already released a Pokémon game for the Switch late last year called Pokémon: Let’s Go! However, it’s been revealed that another Pokémon game will be released in late 2019.

Pokémon: Let’s Go! were actually quite different from your traditional Pokémon, as it mainly contained the mechanics from the popular mobile game, Pokémon GO. This next Pokémon game, however, will be more of a traditional Pokémon game. Despite there being very little details on this game, it’s still highly anticipated by many people.

Pokémon will be released in late 2019.

Town (Working Title)

Town may not ring any bells at first, but this upcoming game is actually being developed by Game Freak, the same company that has been developing Pokémon games for over 20 years.

Town will be a turn-based RPG that takes place entirely in one — you’ve guessed it — town. Town takes place in a small and peaceful village, protected by a great castle. When monsters suddenly start wreaking havoc, it’s up to the player and the villagers to stop them and uncover the village’s secret.

Town will be released sometime in 2019.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Working Title)

Luigi’s Mansion is an action-adventure game that centers around Mario’s beloved brother, Luigi. The player controls Luigi as he explores through a haunted mansion, dealing with ghosts along the way.

It’s been almost twenty years since the first Luigi’s Mansion game on the GameCube, and about six years since its sequel had been released on the 3DS in 2013. Very little information is known about the game, but fans are still hyped for the release.

“I’m really looking forward to Luigi’s Mansion 3,” says sophomore Justin Uribe. “I remember playing both Luigi’s Mansion and Animal Crossing on my 3DS, and they were both really good games!”

Luigi’s Mansion 3 will be released sometime in 2019.

Yoshi’s Crafted World

Yoshi’s Crafted World, features an adorable 2D side-scroller following the adventures of Yoshi. It comes with a little twist, as the levels appear to be dioramas, which makes sense considering the game’s title. Yoshi’s Crafted World also features a co-op mode, pictured above, so you can bring your friend along for the adventure!

Yoshi’s Crafted World was set to be released in 2018 but was delayed until March 29, 2019.

Mortal Kombat XI

Mortal Kombat is an ongoing series that involves extremely violent combat. It’s known to be one of the most successful fighting game franchises and has lived on for the past 20 years.

“I really liked Mortal Kombat overall,” Justin Uribe says. “I’ve played it on a PS3 and PS4. I love fighting games.”

Mortal Kombat 11 was first revealed during the 2018 Game Awards. As usual, it will be on PC and consoles. What was surprising was that it will also be available on the Nintendo Switch. A gameplay trailer and story trailer had been recently uploaded to the game’s YouTube channel.

Mortal Kombat XI will be released on April 23, 2019.

Untitled Goose Game

Jonathan Villafane had never heard of Untitled Goose Game, but the title itself seems to have won him over. “What the heck is it?” he asks. “I’m just curious.”

He’s not wrong to want to know more. Unlike the other games listed here, Untitled Goose Game is an upcoming stealth sandbox game that was developed by indie studio House House. Set in a peaceful village, the player takes control of a goose and completes tasks by honking, flapping wings, stealing, and wreaking havoc upon the game’s innocent townspeople all while trying not to get caught.

A teaser trailer for the game was released back in August of 2018 to positive reviews. Despite not being a “big-title” game, Untitled Goose Game is still highly anticipated due to its unique concept and charming gameplay.

Untitled Goose Game will be released during the first quarter of 2019.
