Catcalling is disrespectful. It is a form of sexual harassment and can cause a toxic environment at school. Yet, at Eastside High School in Southern California, catcalling seems to be the norm.

“I have experienced being catcalled myself,” says Jessica, an Eastside student. “It’s not an attractive way to get someone’s attention.”

Female students come to school to learn, not to be hollered at in the hallways. Rather than telling girls to protect themselves, we should be educating boys on how to behave respectfully.

Catcalling often causes girl to feel unsafe and uncomfortable. And it doesn’t just happen at school. It can happen anywhere, from the workplace to the street. But it should never be viewed as normal.
