Many teens can relate to wanting a dog. While many people find their pets through breeders or pet stores, rescue shelters can also be a great option. One such option is a place called DaphneyLand in Acton, California.

DaphneyLand is a rescue specifically for basset hounds. This rescue was founded in 2005 to find dogs loving, safe homes. They often care for over 60 hounds at a time.

Workers at the rescue often say that the dogs pick their families before the family does. Visitors are given a tour around the rescue with many dogs following at their heels. By the end of the tour, they usually have already found their match.

“Our puppy picked to follow us around almost as soon as we got there,” says Kerin Coffey, a teacher at Eastside. She adopted her dog from DaphneyLand in 2016.

Before a basset can be adopted from DaphneyLand, prospective families have to complete an interview. Once the dogs are ready to be picked up, new owners are taught how to care specifically for bassets. Then the whole family takes a picture with their new pet for the rescue’s Facebook.

If you’re looking to adopt a puppy in need of a home, DaphneyLand is definitely a place worth considering.
