Throughout the generations, many boy groups have stolen the hearts of fans around the world. Groups like The Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and One Direction are examples of mega groups that still carry their legendary titles today. In a time where boy groups aren’t taken seriously, South Korean phenomenon BTS is challenging not only the American industry, but the world as well.

After making their debut in 2013 with hip-hop based album “2 Kool 4 Skool” with their main single “No More Dream” BTS had slowly begun their journey to becoming the biggest boy group in the world. They dipped their music into different genres, such as; hip-hop, rock, EDM, lofi, and pop. In their discography, there is something for everyone to listen to. That’s not why this group is special though.

Throughout their career, BTS has planted many social messages in their music. They have tackled the corrupt education system, spoken about social rights, and even dismissed toxic masculinity. They incorporated the loss of innocence and struggles of the youth in their albums as well. Their most famous albums are the “Love Yourself” trilogy, which talks about the journey of loving one’s self, which garnered a shocking 5+ million album sales worldwide.

“I think it’s amazing.” Eastside freshman Angel Guzman seems interested upon listening to what this boy group has to offer, “That they use their large platform to speak on social issues and are proud of their heritage… they deserve all the hype.”

While 67% of Eastside Students aren’t interested in listening to their music since it’s in another language, they agree that this is a boy group that the world needs. South Korean boy group BTS has shown their popularity in many ways, from ranking high on the Hot 100 charts, having two consecutive #1 albums, and selling out stadiums such as Rose Bowl and the Wembley Stadium.

Eastside junior Dorien says, “That’s crazy. Catch me listening to them soon.”

On April 12, BTS will release their “Map of The Soul: Persona” album, with lead single “Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey, which has already garnered 2.68 million pre order sales. This album will be the start of their “Map of The Soul” trilogy, which will reflect on past mistakes and finding one’s own self. Check it out and see why BTS is changing the game.
