Prom is almost here. It’s one of the most memorable events of senior year.

“Prom is what I’ve been looking forward too since freshman year,” says Eastside senior Claudia Ramos.

To make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience, it’s important to feel beautiful and confident. That’s why we’re giving you some helpful tips to find the perfect prom dress. The perfect dress is key to a perfect night.

Set A Budget

Prom can be overwhelming. So save yourself some stress and set a number for your dress budget. That will help you eliminate any dresses that are definitely too expensive. Just remember, you’ll have accessories and shoes to buy later as well. Blowing your budget on the dress can make it difficult to enjoy all the other parts of prom.

Know Your Body Type

Knowing your face shape will help you pick a neckline that works as well. Study your face and try to determine what type of neckline would work best for you. Oval faces work best with v-necks. Triangular faces work best with “Sabrina” necklines or sweetheart necklines, which are very common in prom dresses. Scoop necklines work best with square faces.

Search The Internet

The internet is a great way to research popular styles. It’s also a great way to find those truly unique accessories that can make or break any prom outfit. One of the best ways to use the internet is to search out stores or styles you like. This gives you an advantage and can help you narrow down your searches. The internet can be especially helpful if you are aiming for a retro look. You can find old school clothing on many resale sites. You may be able to find some in garage sales in your neighborhood, as people sometimes keep their old high school clothes as memory.

Accessorize

Finding the right accessories for your prom dress can be quite stressful. Many girls will go to wedding stores to find jewelry or shoes to match their dresses. Some stores will be able to dye the shoes you’ve picked out to match your dress exactly. Many bridal stores will offer prom deals at this time of year as well. When picking out your jewelry, make sure each piece will work with the style of your dress.

Don’t Procrastinate

Prom season goes by fast. Starting your prom dress research early can save you some headaches. Give yourself an end-goal and make sure that once you find your dress you’ll have time to make any necessary alterations. This can come in handy, especially if you’re buying a dress online. If the worst happens, you may have to return a dress that doesn’t fit right and find a new one. Having time to do this will help get rid of that stress.

“Time was my biggest obstacle. I would recommend getting it a month before prom season even starts that way you ensure to get it on time,” says Eastside senior Amanda Cruz.

Get Creative

If you’re experienced with a sewing machine, you should consider making statement pieces for yourself. You might even make your dress yourself. Many fabric stores offer popular prom dress fabrics during this time of year.

“I remember I had to ask my mom to change the look and add some pieces to my dress because I had gotten the same one as my friend,” says Eastside alumni Kency Salvador.
