Most students have dealt with family problems. These problems can range from not speaking with certain members of the family to parental arguments to fighting siblings. It’s easy for students with family problems at home to carry those frustrations with them to school.

So what’s at the root of these problems?

Eastside freshman Juan Hernandez might have an answer. “I believe communication is one of the main things,” he says. “If they don't talk, they won't know who’s beefing and who’s having problems.”

Poor communication is indeed something that can potentially cause problems in a family. But good communication can help keep family relationships healthy.

Communicating with your parents and anyone else in your family is key. Make sure to keep in touch with everyone. Don’t make anyone feel left out. It could be as simple as calling your grandma or texting your cousins. If people don’t talk about their feelings or let others know about important things, trust is lost. And trust is important.

“Trust impacts a family,” says freshman Engel Lumbi. “Without it, you can’t solve problems that will arise later.”

For some people, trusting isn’t easy. But when it comes to family, trust has to be there. Put everything aside and put your trust in family members. With that trust established, people in your family will feel more comfortable and be able to work through those problems before they arise.

It’s not easy to have problems at home. But it’s also not unique. Everyone will eventually experience problems within their family. The key is to resolve these issues in a healthy and quick way. Opening up lines of communication and deciding to trust other people will help ease family tension.
