Christmas is many students’ favorite time of the year. Especially during Finals Week, campus has been filled with hot cocoa and cookies. Other people, including English teacher Ms. Sova, are wearing ugly Christmas sweaters. Ms. Sova has taken the ugly sweater trend a step further by wearing a different sweater every day since Thanksgiving break.

She announced the plan to her students the day they came back from Thanksgiving. She also mentioned that she’d be going all-out with her Christmas decorations.

This is a tradition that Ms. Sova has been doing for years, buying more sweaters every year. Her ugliest sweater couldn’t be washed, meaning that Ms. Sova was only able to wear it twice. She’ll wear that sweater this upcoming Friday, the last day of the semester.

So how did the tradition start?

“My aunt was also a teacher,” Ms. Sova says. “We kinda just started a little challenge of who had the ugliest Christmas sweaters. I thought my students wouldn’t notice, but they did. They became invested into which sweater I would wear each day.”

And where does she get the sweaters?

“I get my sweaters after Christmas so they are on clearance,” Ms. Sova says. “They will be cheaper because normally they are around $45.”

Eastside junior and chess club leader Aaron Drew appreciates the effort. “I think her sweaters are ugly, yes, but they are great for bringing the Christmas spirit to her classroom,” Aaron says. “Her entire classroom defines the Christmas spirit.”

Eastside junior Ramiro Franco is considering wearing ugly Christmas sweaters himself.

So what will Mrs. Sova do once we come back from break and Christmas is over? Not to worry. she’s got a plan.

“I love sweaters, not just Christmas ones,” she says.
