English teacher Mrs. Berryman, who passed away last month, was a beautiful woman who fought for a cure. Even after a three-year struggle with cancer, she didn’t allow her illness to define her. She fought her personal battle until the very end, determined to leave a positive impact on our campus.

In the process, she touched the lives of many students.

“She brought life to the room,” says Eastside senior David Lopez. “I loved how she would always greet people with her big smile and how she took her time out of her day to sit with someone, comforting them, listening to their problems.”

Eastside senior Melany Rabanal was a member of Link Crew and worked extensively with Mrs. Berryman this school year. She remembers the experience fondly.

“She was someone who would always smile, a person who was very positive and happy,” says Melany. “You would have never known she was going through something because she was always smiling through it. She was a brave person.”

“I love how much she cared for her students,” Melany adds.

Melany’s twin sister, Melody, agrees. “Mrs. Berryman was such a kind, bright, and positive person,” she says. “She would brighten peoples day’s with just her smile. She would smile through the toughest part of her life although it was something very painful. She was encouraging and kind to everyone.”

Cancer can be both scary and painful, but Mrs. Berryman didn’t allow her sickness to break the love she had for her students. Even cancer couldn’t destroy the hope, faith, and peace that defined Mrs. Berryman’s classroom. She was forced to walk a journey nobody in this world wants to walk, but she faced the struggle with courage and positivity.

She will be missed dearly.
