California recently passed a new bill allowing college athletes to get paid sponsorships while still in college. While the NCAA initially said this bill was unnecessary, they’ve since changed their own policy, announcing a rule change that will allow student athletes to get paid beginning in 2023. Many college sports programs bring in millions of dollars for the school, and now students will be able to receive some of that money.

“Basketball is a popular sport and I’m sure they bring in a lot and it would be helpful to get a cut,” says one UCLA basketball player. “It’s not just school you have to pay for there’s food, bills and a lot more.”

Many students here on campus support the bill. Eastside volleyball player Evelyn Bolanos is one of them.

“I’m trying to continue volleyball into college,” she explains, before sharing how the rule change could benefit her. “I’d use some of the money to help pay for books or other things I would need. I’d give whatever is left over to my family.”

In the past, college athletes could receive scholarships, but those scholarships only covered school-related expenses.

That will change in 2023.
