Sexist Parents
Your parents are supposed to be your support system and encourage you not put you down because of your gender. 40.3% of Eastside students say their parents are sexist. Parents put you into this type of category that you can’t do something because it’s too feminine or because its a mans job.
Eastside senior Tatianna Greer was told by her step-dad “girls are not supposed to take out the trash” every since her brother moved out her step-dad makes her take out the trash. Another Eastside senior Jalayah Reyrnardo was told by her mother that “washing dishes isn’t a mans job”. Teenage girls are being told that’s not something a lady should be doing or a woman’s place is in the kitchen.
Eastside senior Jahnyce Johnson says he mom told her at a young age that “pumping the gas is not something girls do when men are in the car”. Parents introduce their children to sexism at a young age. Parents hold this pressure over your head because it makes you feel like you have to prove yourself 10 times more than a boy would.
less than half of the students say their parents being sexist makes them mad because they don’t understand them and their belief system. Ways people cope with sexism around them are they just ignore or fight with the person.
