COVID-19 changed a lot in the past year, especially with the athletes. The pandemic cancelled sports and sports practice for much of this school year and prevented student-athletes from competing against other schools.

Things are starting to return to normal in 2021. On February 3rd, Principal Charles Dunn announced that youth sports and activities will be resumed on-campus conditioning.

This was exciting news to all athletes, coaches, teachers, staffs, and all of the students who loved to sit and watch the games. “I’m very happy to be back with sports,” says soccer coach Mr. Jimenez. “I feel that it gives our students hope, it gives us as coaches life and some kind of connection with our students.”

Even though games have resumed, things aren’t back to normal yet. “As we began the season and training I began to see that it wasn’t going to be normal like the other years,” he says.

It’s not just the soccer team either. Eastside’s girl’s basketball team had their first game of the season last Friday against Quartz Hill.

Sadly, students weren’t allowed to watch the game in person. But luckily we have social media and the internet. At 4:30 pm, the game went live on YouTube. All games this year will be broadcast live on YouTube, at the GoEdTechGo YouTube channel.

Even though the team suffered a rough loss, the players were excited to be back on the court. “I feel content, knowing I can get back on the court and having a season for my Junior year,” says Keyilla Barnes, one of the athletes on the varsity basketball team.

Although she is happy to be playing again, she is looking forward to having more fans back in the stands as conditions improve.

“Will athletes be able to bring more guests eventually?” she asks.
