Over the last few weeks, there has been a lot of focus on the rampant sexual harassment that takes place on Eastside High’s campus. According to a recent survey, 62% of Eastside girls say that they have been catcalled on campus. And 83% of girls surveyed say that catcalling makes them feel unsafe and uncomfortable.

These survey results were recently shared with Eastside’s principle Mr. Dunn, who admits there is a problem. “If you see something or hear something, say something,” Mr. Dunn says. “As a victim, you just need to bring attention to the situation and what is happening.”

One student, who wishes to remain unnamed, is not so sure. “I don’t like going up the stairwell alone when I hear male voices,” she says. “I’m worried that they will try to grab at me, and no one really cares to do anything about it.”

To combat this problem, many students have been trying to bring awareness to the harassment through surveys and posters around the school.

Eastside senior Alayza Ruff says, “I think it’s good that people are opening up about things they have experienced so we can connect and fix the problem. It’s really cool that people aren’t afraid to fight for their rights and stand up for themselves.”

Students are determined to try to put an end to the catcalling on campus. They want to create a safe environment for everyone attending Eastside High.
