The EHS swim team has had a problem coming when the season ends in a few weeks. About half of the swimmers on the team are seniors getting ready to graduate. That means that, next year, the swim team will only have seven swimmers left: 3 boys and 4 girls.

Captain of the girl’s swim team Jasmyn Ely admits that the team is small, but that doesn’t stop them from being competitive. “We are a small team but we get stuff done,” she says.

Elena Martinez is new to the team, but she’s already starting to feel at home. “Due to COVID, this season had kind of an abrupt start and I felt like I just got threw into the team,” she says. “But, on my first day, everyone introduced themselves and I started making new friends.”

“The Eastside Swim team is fun, competitive, and most importantly we’re a family,” she adds.

New swimmers might be scared to join the team because they don’t know how to swim competitively. But Coach Blunden doesn’t think that should be an issue. “We are very beginner friendly,” say Blunden. She’s willing to help students of all levels as they learn to swim, dive, and flip-turn.

If any students are interested in joining the swim team before the spring season next year, please email Coach Blunden at sblunden@avhsd.org or Coach Pelczar at gpelczar@avhsd.org. They can also follow the Eastside swim team on Instagram at @ehs.swim.team.
