While Eastside has many electives to choose from, AVID is the first choice for many students — and for good reason. AVID, which stands Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an organization that helps prepare students for college. AVID helps students become more organized by using a planner. It also encourages students to answer higher-level thinking questions and develop college-level writing skills. The goal of these classes is to prepare high school students for college life.

“A lot of the students that go to Eastside are first-generation college students,” explains freshmen AVID teacher Ms. Singh. “We’re here to support with scholarships, financial aid, and application process. A lot of students wouldn’t have that help otherwise.”

AVID students help each other with problems during class. Tutorial groups, known as TRF’s, are held twice a week to help with difficult subjects and concepts. These tutorials often help students think deeper about their subject, forcing them to ask questions and dig deeper into what they’ve learned. For this reason, AVID can be a great help to students who are struggling in their other classes.

AVID also teaches students better ways to study for tests or quizzes. In addition, these classes can help students learn how to manage their time more effectively.

Perhaps the most commonly-known AVID strategy is the Cornell note-taking process. This strategy is designed to help students take better notes and help them interact with their notes more. Cornell notes encourage students to reflect back on their notes and to help them review for a test or quiz.
