For many students, football games are seen as one of the biggest parts of the high school experience. Despite our losing record, that holds true at Eastside as well. The Varsity season ends tonight, meaning that many students are planning on attending tonight’s game.

If this is your first game of the year, be sure to come prepared for a lot of school spirit. Students in the bleachers tend to go all out with megaphones, chalk, and confetti! In addition to the game itself, there are performances by the cheerleaders and a half-time show from the school band. ASB even runs a snack bar!

“I enjoy going to the football games,” says sophomore Engel Lumbi. “It gives me something fun to do on Friday night. And the games are so much fun. The atmosphere, all the people having fun, enjoying themselves, and just being their best self makes you want to join the fun.”

But not everyone agrees, especially as the temperature continues to drop. The expected temperature at kick-off today is 57 degrees. It’s supposed to drop to 45 degrees by the time the game is over.

“I don’t like sitting in the cold just to see us lose,” says sophomore Trevor Owens. “I also don’t enjoy taking a second and sometimes even third shower to get all the chalk and confetti off me, but if you like that type of stuff. I say go for it.”

Junior Kira Kalliomaa isn’t a fan of the games either.

“I’ve been going here for three years,” she says. “Honestly, it’s a little embarrassing when my friends at other high schools make fun of me because we lost by 50+ points.”

Despite the cold and the team’s losing record, many students are still excited to attend tonight’s game. Sophomore Raymond Lopez hasn’t yet attended a football game, but he wants to.

“I want to go to a football game here at Eastside,” he says. “I know we have a lot of team spirit. Getting to experience that sounds like a really fun time for me.”

Many students feel similarly. We asked over 80 students if they’d made plans to see a football game this year, and 67% said that they had.

If you’re one of the remaining 33%, tonight is your last chance.
