At Eastside High School, Sergeant Rodriguez is a career counselor for students that are interested in the Army. He is also the school’s primary military recruiter.

Sergeant Rodriguez’s main goal is to give students a plan on what they want to do whether they join the Army or not. He wants students to make the decision of what’s best for them.

“There’s a variety of choices that you can choose from,” says Sergeant Rodriguez. The jobs in the Army can range from intelligence and combat support, medical and emergency, computers and technology, legal and law enforcement, arts and media, and many more. Many of these not only prepare you for a career in the Army, but they carry over into a civilian career as well.

The Army will help you choose a suitable job based on your ASVAB score. The ASVAB test is scored from 1 to 100. Qualifying scores start at 31.

About half a dozen students at Eastside High School will enlist in the US Army throughout the school year. Victor Zavala is one of those students. He enlisted on September 19th and will start his career in June of 2019, soon after he graduates.

“I enlisted because I did not have a plan after high school,” says Victor. “But after sitting down with Sergeant Rodriguez and looking at my options, he helped me make a plan.”

“It feels amazing being able to recruit students,” says Sergeant Rodriguez. “It’s a good feeling being able to change someone’s life.”
