What Classes Should EHS Have for Next Year?

According to students, many of the classes at Eastside are “useless” or “boring.” Of course, students will not use every piece of information that they learn at school in their future careers, but they should at least have the opportunity to choose what classes they want to have. And, unfortunately, that’s not happening.

“I didn’t get put in the classes that I wanted,” says sophomore Faith Burris. “All of the electives I picked were full.”

When elective classes are full, the counselor is responsible for picking the classes themselves. Students aren’t always happy with the end result.

Most students would like to see Eastside give their students more elective choices. And it’s not just good for students. It’s good for the school as well. Too often, if a student is put into an elective class that they didn’t want, the student will do nothing and then eventually will fail that class.

So what classes do students want?

72% of students think that there should be a cooking class put into the elective category. A cooking class at Eastside is a great opportunity for students to learn to take care of themselves as they mature. It will help them not depend on others as they get older.

Another popular alternative would be more foreign language classes. Spanish and French classes are already offered, but that’s not enough for some students.

“We should have more foreign language classes” says Cynthia Ramirez, a senior at Eastside. “The more languages we learn, the easier it’s going to be to find a job and communicate with people who speak a different language.”
