While many Eastside students have heard of the Biomed Academy, not all of them know what it is. The Biomed Academy is a four-year program from Project Lead The Way that encourages students to learn science through real-world application.

This all begins freshmen year when Biomed students take Ms. Coffey’s Principles Of Biomedical Science class and investigate the case of a dead woman, trying to discover how she died. In order to do so, these students must examine the deceased woman’s medical history, medical treatments, and autopsy reports.

“I like it because it gives us opportunities to work with stuff that other people might not get to,” says freshman Heather Estrada. She’s enrolled in the Biomed academy.

During each of the six units, students get to do experiments. For example, in order to understand the patient’s diabetes, students needed to test food samples. Recently, in order to better understand the impact of heart disease, students had to design and build a pump to simulate the heart.

Most of the freshmen in Ms. Coffey’s class enjoy the program and plan on continuing the program in the future. If they do so, they’ll take classes with Mr. Gomez and Ms. Cleveland.

“I really like the Biomed program because you learn about different interesting topics,” says freshman Brian Zaragoza. “Ever since I was a little kid I really liked to learn more about how the human body works and different variables that affect it. I think that’s why I always wanted to become a paramedic when I grow up.”

The Biomed Academy is designed to help students like Brian achieve those dreams.
