With the new year comes lots of new entertainment. Here are six Netflix shows that have Eastside students excited for the upcoming year. We’ll start with three news shows and then highlight three returning favorites.

3 New 2019 Netflix Shows

#1: The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy follows the comic series written by Gerard Way and first published on September 19, 2007. The upcoming Netflix Original focuses on a flawed family of superheroes that are trying to uncover the mystery behind the death of their parents. During their investigation, they discover a threat about the apocalypse and many more issues.

“It looks great, sick, and twisted,” said Katie Elliott, a junior at Eastside.

The Umbrella Academy will premier on February 15.

#2: Carmen Sandiego

Carmen Sandiego is an iconic fictional character from a video game called Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? The game was created by Broderbund Software in 1985. Since the original game, Carmen Sandiego has been featured in four television shows, several books, and a few games. The new Netflix Original focuses on Sandiego’s thefts, while educating children about geography.

Angel Delcid, a junior at Eastside, enjoys the new series. “It reminds me of Kim Possible,” he says.

Carmen Sandiego premiered on January 18.

#3: Sex Education

Sex Education is a great show to binge during this new year. The show is a Netflix Original that focuses on real-world teen problems and features lots of advice, drama, comedy, and romance. Otis Milburn takes the responsibility to become a teenage sex psychiatrist at his high school to help students with their personal and relationship problems. If you would like to start your year with humorous, relatable, and loveable characters, check out this new Netflix series right now.

Sex Education premiered on January 11.

3 New 2019 Netflix Seasons

#1: Stranger Things — Season 3

Who doesn’t miss seeing our favorite, loveable characters almost get eaten by Demogorgon? Well, there is more to come! This July, your favorite 80s group will return to protect Hawkins, Indiana, from Demogorgons and the beast. Are you ready?

Eastside junior Jarelie Castellon is ready. “It’s a great solid plot line that does a thriller very well,” says Jarelie.

The new season of Stranger Things comes out on July 4.

#2: A Series of Unfortunate Events — Season 3

A Series of Unfortunate Events is a Netflix Original based on Daniel Handler’s 1999 book series. The show, like the books, focuses on Violet, Sunny, and Klaus, who are orphans investigating their parents’ death.

The new season came out on January 1.

#3: 13 Reasons Why — Season 3

13 Reasons Why started as a book written by Jay Asher in 2007. After its transition into a Netflix Original in 2017, people just could not get enough.

“It is a good example of why we should take mental health seriously and why we should always help people in need,” says Kevin Mohammed, a senior at Eastside.

Although no release date is yet available, the new season is expected to be released in Summer 2019.
